MAUS AND NIGHT BLOG

Maus and Night serve as companion pieces because both books have characters who are determined to survive for as long possible. In Maus, Vladek and Anja promise they will live for as long as they can with each other. This also shows the love these two have, which helps them survive against all odds. In Night, Elie is about to give up on himself and die, but he knows his father won't be able to live without him. Elie eventually makes it through, helping his father live a little bit longer. In both works, once the characters who almost gave up were okay, they stayed fairly healthy and survived. Determination to survive kept these characters alive. I think classes should read both books for a few reasons. I think classes should read Night, because it teaches students to never give up like Elie. When Elie wanted to keep living for his father, it taught me that you should never give up on anything. I think that classes in the future should read both of the books because it gives them to different views on the same important event in history, broadening their view.

Restrepo and Fallen Angels

Scenes
·        In both the movie and book, they went into the heart of the enemy’s territory.  In Afghanistan they go and build a base in the heart of the enemies land. In Fallen Angels they keep having to go further and further up into enemy territory to fight the Viet Cong.

·        Both celebrate/remember their friend’s deaths.  Fallen Angels they celebrated Brew’s birthday by making a cake and in Restrepo they shot of a flare on the anniversary of their friend’s death.

·        One of the soldiers completely broke down in the heat of battle because of a friend’s death and couldn’t accept it.  In fallen angels Johnson could not handle when Brew died.  He didn’t really know what to do.

·        At the beginning of Restrepo the Hummer vehicle hits a land mine which reminds me of when Jenkins steps on a mine and dies in fallen angels.

·        When Staff Sergeant Rugel was killed in a firefight it reminds me of in Fallen Angels when Sergeant Carrol was killed in action.

·        In Restrepo they had IPod’s and PSP’s to keep them entertained while in Fallen Angels they were entertained by volley ball games and books/comics.

·        In fallen angels they prayed when people died such as Brew, and in Restrepo they prayed for the death of the other squad that had 9 people killed across the valley.

·        During the war in Restrepo one of the members didn’t tell his family that Rugel was killed because he didn’t want them to worry and it was his mom’s birthday.  In fallen angels Perry didn’t write home about killing his first guy to his brother Kenny because he didn’t know how to say it yet.

·        In both Fallen Angles and Restrepo the call their base camps Hooch’s.

·        In both Restrepo and Fallen Angels the attack helicopters killed many people of the enemy, but also killed innocent civilians.  This made the villagers mad at them for killing their innocent friends accidentally.

Watching the documentary Restrepo and reading Fallen Angels taught me a lot about war.  One thing I have seen from these was that war is not like how Hollywood movies show it.  There is real violence and it doesn’t show peoples true emotions in Hollywood, and combat is much more realistic and balanced between both sides.  In the book and movie, it was clear that the U.S. struggled a lot at different times.  When the squads went on patrols, they both took fire and lost soldiers.  In Restrepo, they lost Restrepo and they lost Luetenit Carroll in Fallen Angels.  When they were in battles they didn't have an unlimited supply of better weapons to easily take out the enemy like in movies.  The enemy had weapons just as good, and they used good strategies that made it very difficult for the U.S. to fight back.

Siddhartha blog

In the book Siddhartha, siddhartha must leave his freind govinda to fullfill his destiny and complete his liife journey. He tells govinda that he must follow his own path through life and cant learn any more from the Budha. This was hard for siddhartha because he was best friends with govinda since his childhood. When siddhartha decided to leave and go with the Samanas he asked govinda to come with him and he did. This strenghthened their friendship even more, so it was very hard for siddhatha to leave his friend behind.
In my life I can relate to siddhartha and him leaving govinda. Before i lived in Edina i lived in St. Clound and my best friend lived four houses down my street. We would hang out every day, went to the same school and were always on the same sports teams so we were always together. Then when i found out that we were moving i was very sad. Going from seeing him and doing things with every day to never seeing him again was hard but it was what i had to do, just like siddhartha had too.

Macbeth Manliness post

1.
Lady Macbeth
act 1 scene 5 line 47
Quote: "come, you spirits that that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me from crown to the toe top-full of direst druelty." In this quote lady Macbeth is talking about how she wants to be a man in this situation. Macbeth is being a coward and not doing the deed so she wishes she could. She is asking to be a man so she could have the courage and cruelty to do the deed.

2.
Malcolm
act 4 scene 3 line 252
Quote: "lets make us medicines of our great revenge to cure this deadly greif." In this quote Macduffs family has been brutaly murdered and Malcolm tells Macduff to take it like a man, and use it to your advantage to kill and fight Macbeth.

3.
Macbeth
act 5 scene 7 line 1
Quote: They have tied me to a stake. I cannot fly, but, bear-like, I must fight the course. What’s he that was not born of woman? Such one am I to fear, or none.” In this part of the story there is no hope left for Macbeth to survive. So he decides that a man would fight till his death and thats what he does.

4.
Macbeth Sayton
act 5 scene 3 line 38
Quote: "M: I’ll fight from my bones my flesh be hacked. Give me my armor.
                S: Tis not needed sir...”
In this quote Macbeth knows that it is his dutie as king to fight like a man against the army about to take his kingdom. He is told not to by Sayton but he ignores it and chooses to fight the battle like a man, because he knows it would be cowardly of the king to run.

5.
Macbeth and Sayton
act 5 scene 5 line 18
Quote: “M:  Wherefore was that cry?
S: The Queen my lord, is dead
M: She should have died hereafter.”
In this quote Macbeth finds that his beloved wife has comitted suicide. He knows that he has to be a man and grieve here later. So he uses it as motivation and anger towards the army surrounding him.

Odyssey Writing Assignment

A theme that i see through all of the books we read is to always stay true to your leader and when you dont bad things will be upon you, but if you stay true you will be fine. This theme apllies to all of the books but in different examples and senarairios.

Through every book the crew listens to odysseus and avoid alot of danger because of it. In book 12 odysseus tells the crew to put beeswax in thier ears so they are not tempted by the mermaids and so the ship dosent crash. They dont listen to odysseues when he says not to touch the sun gods cattle and the crew disobey him and are all killed by the sun god except odysseus."Sun god keep shiny down on the world, as for the guilty ones ill hit the racing ship with a white-hot bolt of lightning and tear them into splinters" pg 283 414-418

This theme apllies in other senerios for other books also. After Odyesseus goes missing everyone but his wife and a few friends become traitors. They give up hope that Odysseus is still alive and they take his house and wealth, and they use it and destroy it. Then Odysseus takes revenge with his son on the Suitors and other traitors by locking them in the room and killing them all. " Destruction is clear for each and every suitor; not a soul escapes his death and doom" pg 408   628-629

Whoever stayed true to Odysseus, out of the very few who did, were fine and lived to see him regain his kingdom. His wife Penelope, son Tellemicus and very few freinds stay true but everyone else is killed. They never gave up hope and beleived in Odysseus even when everyone else did not and encoureged them to give up on him too. Odysseus tests everyones loyalty by being disguised as a beggar. "Off you go to bed. Ill stay here behind and test the women, test your mother." pg 391   47-48

Joe Mauer

Joe Mauer needs to step up as the team leader for his team the Minnesota Twins. Joe is by far the best player on the Twins now that Justin Morneau is out for the rest of the season. He has many MVP's, Batting Titles and has a huge fan base. He even got more All-star votes than Kirby Puckett. He is such a modest person that he does not want to brag that he is the best player by being the leader of the team. He has the second highest salary on the Twins just behind Justin Morneau because he is so good and valued. Joe Mauer is the best, highest payed player playing on the Twins right now and that is why he shoulod take leadership of the team and help them through the playoffs.
